The evaluation of dementia and alzheimer care and support in Aberdeen city

Local provision

We have carried out an evaluation of dementia and alzheimer care and support in Aberdeen  my home city.  We wanted to find out what tangible dementia reminiscence  therapy there was in  Aberdeen accessible 24/7 for people living with dementia that they could participate in. Our results have established the following facts in relation to day care provision.

It seems to us that there are no regions in the world who have access 24/7 to validated  and customised reminiscence film  therapy. We will certainly change that. 

In Aberdeen there are 5.150 people diagnosed with dementia/alzheimer’s. The total figure with dementia is more than that as many people are still waiting up to 18 months for a diagnosis. How can this unacceptable situation be classed as dementia and alzheimer’s heath care. It is health care abandonment. 

Our findings

Resource day care centres can cope with 30- 40 people living with dementia and alzheimer’s daily.

The low numbers tell their own story

Aberdeen resource centre day care 200 per week.
Other day care therapy for dementia in Aberdeen around 120 per week
Total of 320 people living with dementia and alzheimer’s in Aberdeen city get tangible day care support for at least one two hour session per week. This represents 6.2 % of people diagnosed with dementia and alzheimer’s. This is actual care available to them for 8% of their day. Our therapy is available and accessible 100% of their day.

We applaud the exceptional efforts staff and volunteers contribute to these 320 people. They do  a fantastic job. I provide musical therapy for some of the people they care for.

The Scottish picture of day care support

If the above analysis of the support provided in my home city is only 6.2% of people with dementia and alzheimer’s could this figure be representative of Scotland. Let us say for ease of calculating that 10% is the Scottish figure for people getting day care support that would amount to only 10.000 people are getting that 2 hours of support per week and 80% get no support.
